Switching the TV on when the match was in the 20th over with KKR needing 7 runs of 6 balls, 4 wickets remaining and Ganguly on strike, I thought the match was all but over for the Royals. It wasn’t supposed to end like that.Imagine my delight when Ganguly got out and the last ball saw a run out. This meant, the game wasn’t out of the hand, yet! That was good. The breathing was returning back to normal .Things could go our way in the super over [Incase it hasn’t been made clear, Rajasthan Royals were my favorites for the match].
Enter SUPER OVER: Kamran Khan’s given the ball. Was it the best option under the circumstances? I didn’t know. But I did know that I trusted Shane Warne at that moment. RR needed 15 runs to win. Gettable if we don’t screw up and we did have big hitters. Then came Yusuf Pathan and man, was he on a roll or what! The result, RAJASHTHAN ROYALS WIN THE FIRST SUPER OVER OF IPL!!! A loud whoop came and the victory dance followed. You can’t help but love this team. They did it last year, they are doing it again. And by the look of things, they might be able to pull off quite a few surprises off their socks in the coming games. Sometimes, you can only hope that they somehow turn the game in their favour and the other times, you give up that hope too, and then a miracle happens and they win. Only that these guys have make miracles seem so possible!
At the end of it, one naturally wants to watch the highlights of the game again and relive the moment over and over again. As a result, one turns to the news channels. The coverage IPL gets puts the elections to shame! Anyhoo, the disappointment I felt when I saw what most of the channels were showing was more than the disappointment of not being able to finish an exam off on time. The actual game had taken a back seat to Shilpa Shetty and Raj Kundra and their jubilation on how they beat Shahrukh Khan’s team!! Interview after interview of the two of them. To top it all, there was a question on how hard had Ms. Shetty held on to her beau’s hands in the super over. WTF! Give me a B.R.E.A.K!!Since when have they become more important than the cricket? Oh, my bad, since forever!!! Sure Bollywood’s bringing in the moolah, but so are the OTHER TEAM OWNERS [the non filmy guys] who don’t get half the publicity that the Bollywood backed teams do. They’ve bought expensive players too, so why should these teams hog all the limelight? Shahrukh Khan’s everywhere. He was everywhere last year too and it doesn’t look like it’ll change in many years to come. Didn’t he learn anything from last year? So much hype and publicity generally does end up working against you. Like somebody had said, he will haunt you in your dreams and be a part of your worst nightmares. Ms. Zinta is keeping mum this year only because her team has won only one match so far [something in me wishes that it stays that way, at least it’ll be one less celebrity to be bombarded with!].
The glamour is alright as long as it does not overshadow the game. It brings in the extra entertainment factor, sure. Probably brings in more viewers and money too, but there is a place for everything. Let cricket gets it’s due. Let the on-field do the talking rather than the off-field. Let it be about the players, the teams winning, losing, putting up a great fight and miracles happening!
